ideal job candidate #3 skills

So, what are transferable skills? In the third segment of “Becoming the Ideal Job Candidate,” we’re moving on to how identifying how transferable skills can help you during the interview and any part of the job search.
In the previous posts we addressed: Educational Background and Professional Experience.
Transferable skills are skills that you have developed and gained during your experiences and can be applied to a new job or task. A person’s transferable skills are what can make a person go from average to well-qualified for a job.
An example closer to home would be the team at Different Perspective. Our Creative Director, Robert Jones, has experience as a zookeeper and art director at a sign company. As a zookeeper he practiced multi-tasking daily and became a great team player, as a zoo depends heavily on a cooperative team. His position as art director has given him extensive experience in interacting with customers and translating customers’ requests into something tangible. These are all skills that he applies to his work every day at Different Perspective where he fine tunes his work according to the clients’ vision.
Another example is Rafael Guerra, our Director of Business Research. He has a degree in dental medicine as well as a Master’s in human anatomy and forensic anthropology. Rafael’s medical background allows him to work closely with clients in the health care field. His experiences and teachings are used daily at the office when interacting with interns and new clients.
Throughout the job application, be sure to specify the skills in your repertoire. Spelling out these skills will help employers, who only scan applications for specific keywords and skills. Moreover, be able to explain a situation in which you’ve used your skills to get across you didn’t put the skill for show – show that you know what you’re doing.
Take time out of your busy week to look back at your previous undertakings, how it benefited you and what you’ve learned during your time there. Are there skills you’ve earned that you can apply (or already apply) to your current job?
